Two kinds of McKinney yard, two approaches

McKinney covers a lot of ground. Near the historic downtown you get older lots with grown-in trees, narrow side yards and landscaping that has been added to in layers. Out west the neighbourhoods are newer, the lots more uniform, and the planting often still the builder's minimum.

Clay soil and what it does to beds

The soil across this part of Collin County is heavy clay. It holds water after a storm and then goes hard and cracks in a dry summer, which is why beds that were mounded when they were planted often end up sitting low and holding water against the foundation side.

We deal with that when we rebuild a bed: correct the fall away from the house, amend the soil so roots have somewhere to go, and choose plants that will tolerate both the wet spell and the dry one. Mulch depth matters more here than people expect.
