Mulch breaks down and thins out. Once it does, the soil bakes, water runs off instead of soaking in, and weed seed lands on bare ground and takes hold. You see it first at the front of the bed, where the colour has gone grey and the edge has blurred into the lawn.
Most beds want a refresh once a year. If the bed has lost its shape entirely, that becomes a flower bed renovation rather than a top-up, and we will say so when we look at it.
We clear the bed of weeds and dropped leaf litter, cut a fresh edge so the line between lawn and bed is sharp, then spread mulch to an even depth around plants and trees without burying stems.
What mulch will not do is kill established weeds that are already rooted, and it is not a substitute for a border where soil keeps washing out. If a bed needs stone edging to hold, we do that work too and would rather point it out before you pay for mulch twice.
